Information and advice about testosterone capsules and administering them safely

  • The safety profile is consistent with non-oral testosterone replacement products, carrying the same risks and benefits.

  • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first oral testosterone medication –TU –in March 2019, and the medication was made commercially available in February 2020.¹

Taking Testosterone Capsules:

  • Testosterone Undecanoate 40 mg Capsule is usually taken with or after food to avoid stomach irritation.

  • Take it at the same time every day to maintain a constant level of medicine in your body.

  • Testosterone Undecanoate is not recommended if you are allergic to it or have prostate or male breast cancer. By discussing your current medications and existing medical conditions with your doctor you can ensure this is a safe method of administration for you, and the possibility that other methods might be more appropriate.²

Oral testosterone is not currently prescribed in the UK

It was previously widely thought, based on an older study, that testosterone delivered orally was toxic to the liver, and so pills were not (and still typically aren't) commonly prescribed. However, a recent study found that oral testosterone carried no such liver toxicity over multiple years of the study, which included men of a range of ages.
