Information and advice about nebido injections, what they entail, and how to make them easier

  • This injection should be given to you by someone with training on this specific type of injection

    • This is important as they must have a good understanding of where various veins and tendons are to minimise the pain and risk of your injection, especially as injections in the buttocks carry a greater risk as there is a major artery there, which is essential to avoid.

  • The injection can be given standing or lying.

    • If you are nervous or prone to feeling faint when receiving injections it is best to opt to lie down.

  • Warm up your vial of nebido ahead for your injection as the oil moves a lot easier (both when it comes to drawing up into the needle and injecting into your body) if it is warm.

    • You can do this by keeping it pressed against your skin by your waistband for roughly 10 minutes before the injection.

  • Having the injection:

    • You can ask the nurse to warn you before giving the injection or to not tell you and instead just chat to you and then begin the injection without warning

    • The injection can last 30 seconds-1 minute as there is a lot of slow moving fluid to inject.

    • Try to remain as still and relaxed as possible, as movement or tension can cause a more painful injection.

    • If it helps, bring a loved one to talk to, chat to the nurse giving the injection, or prepare a calming technique you know that you can use.

    • How painful the injection is will vary depending on the nurse giving it and your personal physical and mental state at the time, but it will usually sting during the injection and then ache a little after, but this should pass by the next day. Occasionally, this ache may last a few days so don’t worry if it doesn’t pass that fast.

      • And remember, you’re only getting this 4 times a year rather than having to self inject 26 times a year like is typical for subcutaneous injections!

  • Nebido injections are given every 12-13 weeks (determined by your levels in order to keep them as optimal as possible), so you only need to have 4 per year. This makes it easy to forget about the medical side of your transition which can be very relieving. The downside is you have to wait a long time to switch to a different dose if you find your current one is not right for you, and so often doctors prefer to start using a different method until your levels are stable, before switching you to nebido if you desire.

  • Remember to book your appointment and request your prescription ahead of time!

    • Some doctors surgeries will let you book your next appointment when you get your injection, which is a great choice as you can always reschedule if need be. If not, set a reminder on your phone or utilise another planning tool you have to remember to book your next injection.
